Nina bruised pretty badly on her way out of the birth canal. I was told she might get jaundice, but I was still shocked and unprepared when they told me she had it. The nurse came in with this chart to show me where her bilirubin levels were at and where they like them to be before she can go home. Then, before I knew it, they where wheeling her away from me. I followed. And watched as they took her clothes off and put a mask over her eyes and then stuck her in this box. I was only able to hold her and nurse her for a half hour at a time every 3 hours. It was hard. I hated seeing her with the mask over her eyes and naked, except for the diaper while she lay there all alone. I cried.
24 hours later, her levels dropped. I was there in the nursery when they got the results back so I watched as they turned off the lights, took her out of the box and got her dressed. I wheeled her back to our room and breathed a sigh of relief that she was mine again.
